Hamlet is without doubt, one of the most eminent plays of William Shakespeare in English literature.  The play was probably penned down in the year 1601 or 1602 with its tragic flair and was the most celebrated plays in the history of Shakespeare’s dramatic staged plays.  By writing this play, Shakespeare has achieved artistic adulthood through his excellent depiction of the protagonist’s struggle with two conflicting forces i.e. moral uprightness and his desire to avenge his father’s mysterious murder.

The play is written in the Elizabethan era which is the right time for a revenge tragedy to be a popular public choice. Hamlet is infused with a rich content which is supported by its characters that play an integral part in the drama to make it even more successful. The protagonist, for instance, is a man with immense potential who is struggling to avenge his father’s murder. The female characters won the audience’s heart by their coquettish mannerisms and at the same time they were subtle and submissive. Gertrude had an innocent charm which attracted two men at the same time and even led to sibling rivalry. The male characters were dress-ed according to the characters played by them respectively, for instance, Hamlet who is headstrong and focused is dressed in sturdy way so that he portrays what intentions he had. The facial expressions also played a vital role in depicting the character’s role and hence, have been acted with most caution in order to convey the right emotions to the audience. For instance, the character of Ophelia who at times is a little ambiguous in regards to her decision when it comes to Hamlet’s love for her, has been rightly depicted by her and well accepted by the audience. The stature or physique of the character, also well describes Shakespeare’s knowledge of theatre and drama. For instance, Hamlet, the hero of the drama, is broad- shouldered and strong which showcases his grandeur.  The voice or intonation is kept in mind for the dialogues to be clear and audible to the audience.
