The media often reports on the salaries of sports players. Some of them are in such staggering amounts that the player gets to retire for life if they choose, on just the salaries. For instance, consider the case of Derek Jexter. When Jexter retired from baseball, he was able to retire on his 400$ million in salary and endorsement deals. However, not all sports people would be able to get a deal as good as what Jexter got (Grossman, 2016). In fact, in most cases professional athletes in Canada such as the minor league baseball players are in fact underpaid. Compared to other countries, these players are some of the most underpaid. When the salary amount is deducted from the expenses that they have to incur when they have travel, for food and for clothing then the pay is even less. This essay argues that the sports player in Canada is underpaid compared to international players and this leads them to the situation where they have to take up extra jobs. The discussions are conducted with the example of the Canadian football league CFL.

The life of a sports player needs not always be lavish. Consider the case of the Canadian football players in the CFL. CFL players earn an average $80,000 a year (Valent, 2016). Only starting quarterback’s will earn on the higher end at about $250,000 to $400,000. The average salary made by the CFL player is way less compared to the average salary that an NFL player would make -NFL players make a little less than $2 million in a year. This is twenty-four times more than the average salary made in CFL. Although quarterbacks such as Calvillo are able to make six figure salaries, the other team mates do not make such a salary and hence are not comfortably well off. The average Canadian citizen makes around $76,000 to $80,000 a year and the sports person’s salary is just as much. However, an average Canadian citizen needs not invest in physical training requirements and more such as that of the CFL player. Adding in the costs of travel and more, the sports players in the CFL earn even less.
