The focus of the debate on family and work life is still on the working mothers. In order to accommodate the family, most of the mothers make a huge change in their working lives and hence they can be more involved in the family life and only a small fraction of fathers make huge changes. Instead of seeing pregnant women as professionals who are competent and could perform, most of the employers view them as someone who is about to leave them hanging for couple of months. The opportunity to advance in career is denied to pregnant women by some employers as they assign them menial jobs as they are of the opinion that they won’t be able to handle the problems which involve some huge problems (David and Robbins 1998). These kind of beliefs are just attitude and they don’t have any strong basis. For instance, it is believed by many that following the birth of children most of the women typically leave their career often in their thirties. Many women don’t return at all even though some women might return after early years of child rearing or after a period of maternity leave. The reason behind not returning to work is because of the work-life balance such as part-time working not being possible for some jobs, wanting an extended maternity leave and the cost of children.

There is feeling by the society that the society is moving at a fast pace and technology moves on even when maternity break is taken, the movement of technology is to such an extent that it is very difficult for the returners to keep up and when they return a lot of re-training would be required.
