Woo in most of his movies of the action genre pursues a ‘buddy’ motif which is reminiscent of western order movies where a cop and a partner or a hero and a sidekick are often presented today. Woo’s movies, inclusive of this one, is seen to present a structure that if often repeated. There are two men on opposite sides of the law. The men have their own principles when it comes to evil and redemption. In the end one of the men might die, it could also be the close friend or buddy of the protagonist. This death usually happens in the context of a fight, or a final showdown which Kenneth argues is similar to the jidai-geiki. This leading up sequence where intensity builds up to a final showdown is also present in the movie A Better Tomorrow.
In the movie, in the gun battle sequence where people involved in the battle are portrayed like the modern warriors who have the ethical values of the ancient traditions. The code of honour, brotherhood is seen specifically highlighted in this part of the movie.
