Social mobility is the process where there is movement of the people between the different social dynamics that exist in the society (Colley, 2006). There are several factors that lead the people to develop definitive action. Social mobility of action is a positive trend towards the society. This creates the paradigm that when people work hard, they will be rewarded. This lack of social mobility will cause the social structure to become stagnant. The working class will continue to have the same social structure and there will be no development. The income gap will continue to be dividing factors between the people. The people will not be able to gain fruits of their labour (Thompson, 2016). The working class in the society will continue to be dominated by the ruling class. The pressures of the society and the ideology or the beliefs of the family lead a person to choose a profession. There is a sense of pride in manual labour for the lower income group and they consider their identity to be a part of this profession. In this process, the external strength of the lads is a part of their machismo and the prevailing patriarchal notions force them to choose vocation based on this ideology.

A growing disdain towards capitalism and collectivistic notion forces the lads to choose the same manual labour. They make this choice to fit into the normative standards of the society. The other jobs that are deemed to be desk jobs are touted to be feminine jobs. These factors are as impeding agents to the ‘lads’ in gaining a systematic education. They prefer to learn through the street wisdom. While this enables the society to gain collectivistic ideologies, it also creates a situation where the people are forced to make decisions to conform to the society. This paradigm continues to manifest itself in newer forms in the modern society. There is a dichotomous view of collectivism and individualism. This forces the ‘lads’ to make a decision about their vocation, as Willis (1997) had argued. In the end, the majority of the ‘lads’ choose a profession to just fit into the normative standards of the society. This is the reason that the social mobility is not espoused in the different groups in the society. This is detrimental trend that needs to be changed. Without change, it is possible that the social stratification will only get deeper.
