The Japanese consider humour as absurd and unusual which is quite contrary to how it is accepted in the rest of the world. However, in reality it is not totally absent and laughter and wit is frequently observed. Nevertheless it is not necessary to understand the fragile puns of the Japanese language so as to understand their humour and comedy. Humour may be inconsistent in nature with each country having its own set of rules and logic. The aim of this dissertation is limited to the study of why Osaka Warai or the Humour Culture has been so popular in Japan. The example of the Yosimoto Creative Agency has been taken to understand the culture in depth and how it has evolved over time. The boom of comedy or Owaria is considered as a recent phenomenon in Japan and there is a lot to it other than just viewing it through a social canvas. It is quite difficult and vague to establish the boundaries of any reform connected to the culture of that nation but the evidence that existed on the matter that humour had progressed by the time the Manzai boomed, i.e. in and around the 80s, is quite substantial. However the reality with it is that the significance of humour prior to the Second World War and after it in Japan can be distinctly observed.

Laughter and wit was then valued much lesser and was socially aloof in comparison to what it is now. The societal restrictions of humour like only smiling as a social practice is slowly fading and the youth today are quite expressive and free with laughter than before. The scenario today is quite different with humour being actively sought after and spread through media and even being socially better accepted. There are a range of television programs that revolve around the theme of comedy and are completely dedicated to it. The Red Carpet Enta noKamisama and comic monomane contests are to name a few. Famous comedians like Takeshi Kitano Shinsuke, AkashiyaSanma and the manzai team Downtown have become the hosts and are successful in their work. They are considered to be the topmost television entertainers of the Japanese nation and are respected highly for their craft and wit. The annual conducted “M-1 Grand Prix” is a competition that has been in existence for the past 15 years and is a prominent event of national stature for the aspiring and professional comedy actors. Youngsters today are more than before interested in becoming professional comedians (Yamanaka, pp. 1-17).
