Comcast have the monopoly over the high speed Internet networks. Due to which scholars believe that Internet access is becoming progressively more monopolistic, this is happening because the cable services are sitting in the most appropriate position to provide 100 megabytes per second (Mbps) or 1 gigabyte per second (Gbps) service, which is very effectively required to watch high definition videos. However, the companies like Comcast and Verizon had once faced the completion from the telephone companies, who offered Internet lines, which are also called as digital subscriber line (DSL). According to Crawford (2013), DSL had become obsolete.
Verizon is a wireless phone service provider, which provides wireless Internet services for the phones powered by Google’s Android, Apple’s IOS, Windows Phone by Microsoft and OS service of BalckBerry. The Fiber to the home (FTTH) service offered by Verizon has posed an effective completion to the cable service providers. They stopped focusing on FTTH and have expanded the wireless broadband. The Comcast has the monopoly over the high speed Internet in United States, which will combine with the programming properties of NBC Universal, and their combination will pose a barrier to the last mile connectivity of the OBC’s (Crawford, 2013). The merger of Verizon and AT&T will effectively work as the duopoly in the Internet market and it is unlikely that they will reduce their price or improve their service currently.
