The sample size of the research is 118 students who were to establish an association with four Facebook profiles. Two professors were also engaged in the experiment, among which one professor is known to all the participants while the others are unknown (Ozturk, 2016). Hence the actual sample size was reduced to 92 to avoid experimental manipulation (van Velzen, 2016).
Types of Data Collected
The researchers in the research have collected only primary data from 118 students through the research instrument of an online questionnaire. These primary data were appropriate for the purpose of the research. This is because, in order to investigate the impact of the user-generated content on online advertising, the users who are actively engaged in the social media activities should have been researched (Ganesan & Kirana Kumar, 2015). The researcher has rightfully selected young students for the research and directed them to participate in the online questionnaire survey to collect the primary data from them. The primary data was collected as it helped the researcher to address the specific research issues on the role of collective influence and personal influence on the online advertising. Through the primary data collection, the researcher was able to exercise greater control of the social media market and retrieve higher level of updated information (Alsayed, Maguire-Wright & Flickinger, 2016). However, the researcher could have collected a secondary data to underpin the research outcome substantially. The researcher could have collected information and data from the second sources of information such as journal articles, peer-reviewed articles, books, and magazines. The secondary data could have ensured feasibility of both the international comparative studies and longitudinal studies for fulfilling the research purpose. With the help of the secondary data collection, the researcher could have been able to carry out the study on a worldwide basis with the same criteria of the research undertaken (Hughes, 2012). For example, the data collected from the World Values Survey on the response and participation rate of the users on the social media websites could have reinforced the research purpose of the current research to examine the user generated content and the online advertising. Thus, apart from the primary data, the researchers could have also collected the secondary data to strengthen and further support the research purpose (Stein, 2015).
